well thats a hard question considering how many metal detectors are sold these days, I suggest try or circuitcity.com maybe you can find one in a wal mart? Maybe in a best buy store, it ranges try google too, and if your maybe looking for a not to nice not to pricey i suggest e-bay but the reason why is if you find a good one tat’s cheap make sure to check the auctioneers feedback this is criucial (spell check sorry) when buying from there.

ohiohayabusa. I have written a great column on my website about this on http://www.metaldetectorgold.com. In addition you can what you want by looking in the store that is located on the same site. If you are new to the hobby I would be looking at the Tesoro Compadre (extremely easy to use) or the Garrett Ace 150 or Ace 250 depending on what your budget is.
Good luck and feel free to email me with any questions.

Try a Bounty Hunter. You can get from Wal-Mart. It is a good machine and does a pretty darn good job. They should run from about $100 to $200 and be a pretty a good bargain. Look at e-bay also and craigs list. there are a lot of those in closets and basements , I bet. .
I have Whites that is great, but expensive and a little hard to get used to. I also have another one that one of my kids is using. I cannot remember the name of it at this moment. The Bounty Hunter is a good gizmo, but I guess it depends what you want to do with it. I have a friend that has a BH and I like to use it because it is well balanced and generally pretty light.
Best of luck

I just played around with my friends Tesoro Compadre. I still think it is one of the easiest detectors out there for the price. It is light easy and quick. And remember with the digital read outs are not always on the money. Sometimes it is better not to learn that way.
Hope you find a nice one. Just getting into the hobby can be fun.
