The best are the ones that find metal.

Seriously, for the < $100 price range, you'll be able to find some that can find a quarter 3-5 inches under the ground. It's a great hobby, I found a civil war pistol, 1850-1860 coins, old buttons, about $30 in change, a bunch of bottle caps and license plates...all in about 20 hours over 4 months (I thought I'd use it more : )

Some used detectors:

Froogle under $100.00
=&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=used+metal+detectors&lmode=online&lnk=pruser&hl=en&price1=0.00&price2=100.00&btnP=Go

Good luck and have a great time!!

PS: If it's your first time, find a hobby store in your area and actually lift it up, 'pretend' to use it. My vertically challenged friend could not use mine (I'm 6' 3") she is 5'2". They are adjustable, but you prolly don't want to be luggin around one of the big 'uns for any extended period...get a strap.
