    Good Afternoon,
You are asking a question asked by many people who want to get into metal detecting. I have to make a couple of presumptions given the information you give me.

    1. The most important one, is that the water you will detect in is fresh water and not sea water. If you want a metal detector to detect in sea water, save your money until you are well over $500 for a machine that will satisfy your needs.
    2. There is a local dealer near where you live who will help you.

If you are detecting in shallow fresh water, and do not intend upon submurging your detector (only the coil and shaft), you should look at a Garrett ACE 250. This machine is easy to operate, very forgiving to newbys and very reasonably priced.
If you intend upon detecting in the surf (again fresh water) and you worry you may get your machine wet, look at the “Wader” from Detector Pro. .

If you wish to find out about detectors, try to find a local dealer in your area. If you wish to join a Yahoo metal detector club, look at

We have literally thousands of years of detecting experience under our belts and are willing to help you find help in your area.
    Regards, David in Madison

Take a look at the Tesoro line. Lifetime warranties are hard to beat. While their low end models dont have all the bells and whistles they are very reliable and easy to use. After that I would look at the Garrett Ace 250
