Would a Metal Detector Detect Gold in a Streambed ?
harlanauctions asked:
A buddy of mine just purchased a mining claim and I was wondering whether or not a metal detector would be able to detect small traces of gold, like one would find if using a pan ? Or would the gold likely be too small ?

depends on the sensativity of the detector but most likely not, panning is the best option

depends on the type metal detector you bought and the setting you choose…i have a fisher c-z 5 and it didn’t recognize small pieces of gold in a north carolina stream, but the garrett “ace” 250 did…check your instructions for choosing the correct settings, and usually when searching for small pieces of gold, you need to set the sensitivity up highter than normal…hope this helps…good luck in your searching…bill

Maybe, but you will also find every poptop, fishhook, lead sinker or metal button in the stream.
