METAL DETECTORS: Need recommendations for one around $500-600 for general dry climate hobby type work?

I have looked at the major brands, (White, Garrett, Tesoro) plus stuff from stores such as Radio Shack and Cabelas. I want one with a removable battery/control pack so I can put it on my belt and headphones. Not searching for anything specific, like gold or silver, just want a metal detector that is well made for general searches.

   I would suggest the Garrett Metal Detectors. They are very reliable, well made and most are light weight. The Ace 250 is only $212.46, it weighs only 2.7 lbs and it has a lot of the features of some of the more expensive models. Also, in your price range is the GTA X 550 and the GTI 1500. They are both great units as well. The only ones with a hip mount control (battery pack) is the Infinum or the Sea Hunter Mark 2. They are are both Pulse Induction machines and work well (or better) near or in the water, but can be used on land too. I hope this helps you in your decision.
